Soft Agave (Foxtail Agave)

Plant offsets in well-drained, dry to moderately moist soil in full sun to partial shade — soft agave is unique among agaves in having spineless, flexible, blue-gray to pale green leaves without a terminal spine, making it the only agave safe to plant near foot traffic, children's play areas, and along walkways. The large, architectural rosettes of softly recurving, powdery blue-gray leaves are among the most beautiful foliage effects in the succulent garden. Unlike most agaves, it tolerates partial shade and actually performs better in dappled light in hot climates where full sun bleaches the gray leaf color to yellow-green. The spectacular arching flower spike (10–15 feet, resembling a giant foxtail) is produced once at maturity, then the parent rosette dies leaving offsets. Cold hardiness is limited to about 26–28°F; excellent for zone 9–11 landscapes and large containers in cooler zones.
