Scatter seed on the soil surface — lightly pressed in but not covered — in moist, average soil in full sun to partial shade; despite belonging to the iris family, this diminutive native looks like a grass until the small blue-violet flowers with yellow centers open in late spring. It blooms most heavily in spring but continues sporadically through summer, and the tufted grass-like foliage remains attractive all season. Allow some seed heads to ripen for naturalization; the plant self-sows freely in favorable conditions to form charming colonies in meadow edges and lightly shaded areas. Divide clumps every 3–4 years in spring to maintain vigor.
