White mustard

Broadcast at roughly 0.25-0.5 lb per 1,000 sq ft onto a firm, moist seedbed and rake to a shallow 0.25 inch depth. White mustard germinates rapidly in cool soil and is often grown to suppress cyst nematodes and weeds. It grows quickly but is less winter hardy than brown mustard, so it typically winterkills once temperatures drop into the low twenties. Terminate by mowing at early bloom and incorporating the residue, or simply let frost kill it and leave the residue as protective mulch. Follow with a spring vegetable once residue has broken down.
