Опис
Silk Bay is a Florida endemic member of the laurel family, native to the ancient, fire-maintained scrub habitats of the central and southern Florida peninsula, where it grows in pure white sand alongside Scrub Hickory, Florida Rosemary, and scrub oaks in conditions of extreme infertility and drainage. The leaves are smaller and silkier than those of the closely related Red Bay and Swamp Bay, with a distinctive silky pubescence on the undersides; small, dark blue-black drupes produced in summer and fall provide important food for Florida Scrub-Jays, fish crows, and migratory songbirds. Like all native bays in the genus Persea, Silk Bay is highly susceptible to laurel wilt disease, an exotic fungal pathogen spread by the redbay ambrosia beetle that has devastated native bay populations across the Southeast. Plant in extremely well-drained, infertile, acidic, sandy soil in full sun to partial shade; this species demands perfect drainage and will quickly decline in heavy, wet, irrigated, or highly amended soils.

Plant container-grown transplants in spring in extremely well-drained, infertile, acidic, sandy soil in full sun to partial shade; Silk Bay will quickly decline in heavy, wet, or overly fertile soils. It is highly susceptible to laurel wilt disease spread by the redbay ambrosia beetle — plant in isolated or protected settings.
