Plant in well-drained, rocky to loamy, slightly acidic soil in partial shade; fire pink naturally grows on rocky woodland slopes and bluffs, where its brilliant scarlet flowers from spring through early summer are among the most vivid colors in the eastern woodland garden. The tubular, five-petaled flowers are perfectly shaped for ruby-throated hummingbirds and are a critical food source for hummingbirds moving through the mid-Atlantic states in spring. This plant is short-lived (3–4 years) but self-sows reliably to maintain a colony. Unlike most Silene, it performs best with afternoon shade rather than full sun. Combine with wild columbine and native ferns for a stunning spring vignette.
