Shrimp Plant

Plant in partial shade in moist, humus-rich, well-drained soil; shrimp plant is one of the most charming and long-blooming perennials for shaded Gulf Coast gardens, named for the distinctive overlapping reddish-brown bracts (modified leaves) that form arching, drooping spikes 3–4 inches long, closely resembling a cooked shrimp — from the tip of each bract emerges a delicate white two-lipped flower. Bloom is essentially continuous from spring through frost and often persists in warm winters. It performs equally well in light shade or partial sun, making it versatile for difficult spots under the canopy of large trees. Hummingbirds visit the flowers readily. A yellow-bracted form ('Fruit Cocktail' or 'Yellow Queen') provides the same long bloom season in a lighter color. Pinch the plant back after bloom flushes to keep it compact and stimulate fresh growth. Propagate from stem cuttings, which root readily in moist soil.
