Oconee Bells

Oconee Bells is one of the rarest and most celebrated native wildflowers in North America — an Appalachian endemic once thought extinct, restricted to a handful of gorge sites along the headwaters of the Savannah River in western South Carolina, southwestern North Carolina, and extreme northeastern Georgia, where it grows in spray zones of stream gorges in dense, deeply shaded, moist, acidic forests with rhododendron and galax as companions. A compact, slowly spreading evergreen ground cover with rounded, glossy, galax-like leaves and nodding, fringed white to pale pink bell-shaped flowers that emerge from January to March before most woodland plants have awoken, it is one of the first signs of spring in the southern mountain garden. It requires extremely acidic, consistently moist, humus-rich soil with perfect drainage in deep shade, and is notoriously slow to establish — expect 2–5 years before a planting spreads noticeably.
