Опис
Plant in well-drained, slightly alkaline to neutral, dry to moderately moist soil in full sun — sensitive briar is a fascinating native trailing groundcover of the Gulf Coast and southern prairies, with two remarkable properties: the delicate, fern-like, bipinnate leaves fold closed immediately when touched (thigmonastic movement — the same sensitivity as the tropical 'sensitive plant'), providing an entertaining and educational garden element, and the stems are lined with small, recurved prickles similar to rose thorns. The spherical, bright pink pompom flowers in late spring and summer are delightful and attract native bees. It spreads flat along the ground to cover dry, rocky, or sandy open areas. As a legume, it fixes nitrogen from the air, improving soil fertility for neighboring plants. An outstanding native for dry, sunny slopes, caliche hillsides, and disturbed areas where its drought tolerance and sprawling habit control erosion while providing summer bloom and ecological interest.
