Catclaw acacia — nicknamed 'wait-a-minute bush' because its small, curved, cat-claw-like thorns snag clothing and skin, halting passage — is a native shrub to medium tree of dry washes, rocky slopes, and desert grasslands from south Texas to California and south into Mexico. Despite its formidable armament, catclaw acacia is one of the most important native bee plants in the Chihuahuan Desert and south Texas, producing abundant cream-colored, cylindrical flower spikes in spring that support hundreds of native bee species and are the source of a prized honey; it is considered the single most important native honey plant in the Sonoran and Chihuahuan Deserts by commercial beekeepers. The long, flat seed pods ripen in summer and fall and are consumed by deer, javelinas, and large-seeded birds; the dense, thorny structure of established shrubs creates impenetrable wildlife brush habitat essential for quail, roadrunners, and nesting songbirds throughout south Texas. Best suited to xeric native plantings, dry washes, and wildlife habitat gardens where its thorny nature is an asset rather than a liability.

Direct sow scarified seeds in spring in dry, rocky, alkaline, or sandy soil in full sun; catclaw acacia develops a deep taproot quickly and is extremely drought tolerant once established — not suitable for moist, clay, or frequently irrigated soils.
