Опис
Seashore Mallow is a native perennial of coastal marshes, tidal margins, and salt-tolerant wetlands along the Atlantic and Gulf coasts from Long Island south through Florida and west to Texas, where it produces an extended succession of pink hibiscus-like flowers from midsummer through fall on upright, 3–5 foot stems. The seeds are high in protein and edible fatty acids, the roots are starchy and edible, and the mucilaginous leaves and flowers are used in folk medicine similarly to other Malvaceae family members — making Seashore Mallow one of the few native coastal plants with genuine multi-use potential. An important nectar source for native bumblebees, honeybees, and the Cloudless Sulphur butterfly, it has been studied as a potential grain crop for salt-impaired soils where conventional crops cannot grow. Plant in full sun in wet, coastal, sandy to loamy soil; Seashore Mallow tolerates moderate salinity, fresh to brackish conditions, and periodic flooding, self-seeding readily once established in appropriate settings.

Direct sow seeds in spring after frost in wet, salt-tolerant, sandy or loamy coastal soil in full sun; scarify the hard seed coat with sandpaper or soak in warm water for 24 hours before planting to speed germination. Seashore Mallow tolerates fresh to brackish coastal marsh conditions and periodic inundation.
