Опис

Scrub Hickory is a rare and imperiled native nut tree endemic to the ancient, fire-maintained Florida scrub habitats of the central Florida ridge, where it grows in pure white sand soils of extremely low fertility that are inhospitable to most other plants. A small tree rarely exceeding 25 feet, it produces small, round, thick-shelled nuts with bitter kernels that are eaten by Florida Scrub-Jays, fox squirrels, gopher tortoises, and other scrub wildlife, making it a keystone component of the Florida scrub food web. Plant fresh nuts in fall in pure, infertile, sandy, extremely well-drained soil in full sun — excessive water, clay, or organic matter quickly kills this species. In cultivation, Scrub Hickory performs best in open xeric settings that mimic native scrub conditions, and benefits from the periodic, low-intensity fire that characterizes and maintains the Florida scrub ecosystem. Спосіб посадки: Посів у відкритий ґрунт Відстань між рослинами: 120–180 дюймів Висота: 180–300 дюймів Дні до схожості: 30–90 Температура ґрунту для схожості: 10–21°C

Mimicking the open Florida scrub habitat is essential for successful establishment.
