Опис
Plant in well-drained, slightly alkaline to neutral, rocky to clay, dry to moderately moist soil in full sun — bastard oak (Quercus sinuata) is a medium to large deciduous white oak of the limestone-dominated Edwards Plateau, Cross Timbers, and Gulf Coast prairies of Texas and adjacent states, notable for its distinctive leaves with deep, rounded, scalloped lobes unlike any other Texas oak. It grows on rocky limestone hillsides and in deep clay draws, tolerating both the thin, alkaline, rocky soils of the Hill Country and the heavy black clay soils of the Blackland Prairie with equal adaptability. The tree is moderately fast-growing for an oak, long-lived, and provides outstanding shade and wildlife value (acorns in the white oak group ripen in one season and are highly palatable to deer and wildlife). An underutilized oak for the challenging alkaline, clay, and limestone soils of central and south Texas garden sites where other oaks perform poorly.

Plant container specimens in fall in well-drained, slightly alkaline to neutral, rocky to clay soil in full sun to partial shade; bastard oak is adapted to the limestone soils and rocky, alkaline, well-drained upland sites of the Edwards Plateau and Gulf Coast prairies, where it grows in conditions that exclude most other oaks.
