Plant in moist, slightly acidic, humus-rich, well-drained soil in full sun to partial shade — saucer magnolia is one of the most spectacular flowering trees in the world for spring impact, producing enormous, tulip-shaped flowers (4–10 inches across) in shades ranging from deep rose-purple to pale pink to white, borne on bare branches before the leaves emerge in late winter to early spring. A single tree in bloom is visible from hundreds of feet away. The hybrid origin (M. denudata x M. liliiflora) combines cold hardiness and floriferous habit; named cultivars include 'Lennei' (deep rose-purple), 'Alexandrina' (pink and white), 'Brozzonii' (nearly white), and 'Rustica Rubra' (rich rose). The main risk in the South is late frost damage to early-opening buds in zone 5–7; in zone 8–9, this is rarely a problem and plants bloom reliably and abundantly.
