Опис
Satinleaf is one of the most visually striking native trees of south Florida's tropical hardwood hammocks, native to coastal hammocks, marl prairies, and pinelands from Brevard and Hillsborough counties south through the Keys and into the Caribbean, recognized immediately by its distinctive two-toned leaves — rich, dark, glossy green on top and brilliant coppery-golden on the undersides — that shimmer and flash in the breeze with each passing gust. Small white flowers produce small, dark purple to black berries (1–1.5 cm) that are sweet and edible and an important food for mockingbirds, robins, and migrating warblers; the fruit is also edible for people, with a flavor reminiscent of a mild grape. In south Florida native landscapes it works beautifully as a specimen tree, understory tree under larger canopy, or informal screen in partial shade; it tolerates the thin, rocky, alkaline marl and limestone soils of Miami-Dade County where many plants struggle. Grow in well-drained to moderately moist soil in partial to full sun in zones 9b–11.
