Sarvis Holly

Sarvis Holly is a rarely cultivated native deciduous holly of moist, low-lying forests, wet woods, and stream margins of the coastal plain from South Carolina to Louisiana, producing clusters of small pink to red berries that ripen in late summer and fall and are avidly consumed by mockingbirds, bluebirds, robins, and other fruit-eating birds during the critical pre-migration feeding period. The name 'sarvis' is a folk rendering of 'serviceberry' or 'service tree,' reflecting the ripening time of its berries relative to other fall food sources. Less commonly cultivated than Possumhaw or Winterberry hollies, Sarvis Holly thrives in the wet, shaded conditions of bottomland forest and stream banks where larger hollies may struggle, and deserves wider use in native plant landscapes. Plant rooted cuttings in moist to wet, slightly acidic, humus-rich soil in partial shade; dioecious, so both sexes are required within pollinator range for berry set.
