Plant rhizomes 1 inch deep in moist, humus-rich, slightly acidic soil in partial to full shade beneath deciduous trees; bloodroot is one of the earliest and most beautiful spring woodland wildflowers, producing brilliant white, poppy-like flowers (the double-flowered form 'Multiplex' looks like a white peony blossom) that emerge wrapped in the lobed, glaucous-blue leaf before it unfurls. Flowers last only 1–2 days in warm weather but are intensely striking. The common name refers to the bright orange-red sap from the rhizome, which was used by many Indigenous peoples as a dye, insect repellent, and medicine — note that this sap is caustic and toxic in quantity. Plants go dormant by midsummer; mass planting with hostas or ferns hides the bare spots.
