Plant in moist, fertile, slightly acidic soil in full sun to partial shade; American elderberry is one of the most productive native fruiting shrubs, bearing enormous flat-topped flower clusters in early summer that are irresistible to pollinators, followed by drooping clusters of small dark purple-black berries in late summer used for syrups, jellies, wine, and immune-support preparations. Plant at least two genetically distinct clones for better cross-pollination and heavier fruit set. The shrub spreads by root suckers to form large thickets; remove suckers promptly to control spread. All parts of the plant except fully ripe, cooked berries and flowers should be considered toxic when consumed raw. Cut all canes to 12 inches in late winter every 3–4 years to rejuvenate; older canes are pithy and produce poor crops.
