Anise Sage (Black and Blue Sage, Brazilian Sage)

Plant in well-drained, moderately fertile soil in full sun to partial shade; anise sage is one of the finest hummingbird plants for Gulf Coast gardens — the cultivar 'Black and Blue' in particular is prized for its deep, vivid cobalt-blue flowers held in glossy black calyces, producing a stunning color combination that is a magnet for rubythroated hummingbirds from summer through frost. The large, heart-shaped leaves are aromatic when crushed. In zone 7–11 it grows as a perennial from tuberous roots, with top growth dying back after frost and resprouts from established tubers in spring, often growing 4–5 feet tall and wide by midsummer.
