Plant in very well-drained soil in full sun to partial shade; despite the common name, the sago palm is not a true palm but a cycad — one of the oldest surviving plant lineages on Earth, essentially unchanged since the Mesozoic Era. The dramatic, crown of stiff, glossy, dark-green fronds radiating from a thick, rough-textured trunk (which grows extremely slowly — gaining only 1–2 inches per year) makes it one of the most architecturally striking landscape plants available for zones 8–12. An established specimen with multiple trunks is an invaluable focal point in any tropical or subtropical garden. The plant produces bright orange-red seeds in large cone-like structures; every part of the plant — seeds, leaves, and trunk — is extremely toxic to humans and pets. In coastal Gulf Coast gardens it is one of the most reliable landscape plants available, tolerating salt, drought, heat, and wind with ease. Apply palm-formulated fertilizer with added manganese in spring to prevent the common yellowing from micronutrient deficiency.

Plant container-grown specimens in spring in very well-drained, slightly acidic to neutral, sandy to loamy soil in full sun to partial shade; perfect drainage is the primary cultural requirement — sago palms decline rapidly in heavy clay or waterlogged soils. All parts of the plant are extremely toxic to humans and pets — manganese deficiency (yellow fronds) is common in alkaline soils and is treated with chelated manganese.
