Опис
Plant rooted divisions in fall in well-drained, slightly acidic to neutral, loamy to sandy soil in full sun to partial shade — southern dewberry is the dominant wild trailing blackberry of the Gulf Coast and Deep South, carpeting open woodlands, roadsides, fencerows, and disturbed ground from Texas to Florida with trailing, thorny canes that root at the tips wherever they contact soil. In early spring the canes are blanketed with small white five-petaled flowers excellent for native bees, followed by clusters of large, juicy, glossy black berries in April–May that are sweet, aromatic, and superb for eating fresh, making jam, or freezing. Unlike erect blackberries, dewberries trail flat along the ground rather than arching upright, making them a natural mulching ground cover under fruit trees and along the edges of food forest plantings. Harvest before full ripeness for jam; eat fresh at peak ripeness. Remove oldest canes after fruiting to keep the planting productive.
