Black raspberries are erect, arching canes that propagate by tip layering rather than suckering; they have a richer, more intense flavor than red raspberries and are popular for jams and wines. Tip-prune primocanes at 24–30 in in midsummer to force lateral branching, then shorten those laterals to 8–12 in the following late winter for maximum fruit bud development. Remove all floricanes after harvest and any tips that have rooted outside the row. Do not plant near red raspberries or wild Rubus, as black raspberries are highly susceptible to aphid-spread viruses.
