Great rhododendron

Rosebay rhododendron (great laurel) is the largest native rhododendron in North America — capable of reaching 20–35 feet in the moist, cool, deep shade of Appalachian stream gorges and hemlock forests — and produces massive trusses of white to pale pink, spotted flowers in June and July, a month later than most other rhododendrons, making it the last and largest-flowered of all native flowering shrubs in the eastern forest. Its enormous, glossy, dark green leaves (up to 10 inches long) curl tightly during cold weather as a frost protection mechanism, a distinctive winter character; the dense, multi-stemmed growth creates impenetrable evergreen thickets in shaded stream valleys that are critical winter shelter for ruffed grouse, white-tailed deer, and black bears. It is the most shade-tolerant of all native rhododendrons — thriving in the darkest understory beneath eastern hemlock, where little else with ornamental value grows — and represents one of the few truly shade-tolerant, large-scale evergreen flowering shrubs for the eastern native garden. Grows slowly but long-lived; once established it requires minimal care in appropriate conditions.
