Hoary azalea

Plant in moist, humus-rich, well-drained, acidic (pH 4.5–5.5) soil in dappled shade to light sun; the Piedmont azalea is among the most beautiful and fragrant of the native deciduous azaleas, naturally found in woodland edges and along streams from Virginia to Florida and Texas. The pale pink to white flowers with long, exserted stamens appear in early spring before or with the new foliage, giving the plant a delicate, open appearance very different from the dense evergreen hybrid azaleas. Unlike most garden azaleas it tolerates zone 9 Gulf Coast summers well. Prune only after flowering, removing no more than one-third of the plant at once; never shear. Amend soil heavily with compost and pine bark before planting.
