Plant in moist, deeply acidic (pH 4.5–5.5), humus-rich, well-drained soil in partial shade from taller deciduous trees; flame azalea is the most spectacular of the native deciduous azaleas, producing brilliant orange, red, and yellow flowers (often in multiple hues on the same plant) in late spring that blaze against the emerging green foliage at the peak of the Appalachian wildflower season. The flower display can range from pale yellow to deep orange-red depending on the individual plant's genetics — purchase in bloom to get the color you want. Plant with the crown above soil level and mulch lightly with pine bark or oak leaves to maintain acidity. Prune only lightly after bloom to shape.
