Red Stopper is a native evergreen shrub or small tree of the subtropical coastal hammocks of the Florida Keys and Miami-Dade County, as well as much of the Caribbean, producing small clusters of edible red to black berries that are sweet and aromatic, relished by white-crowned pigeons, mockingbirds, and other subtropical fruit-eating birds. The glossy, elliptical leaves emit a spicy fragrance when crushed, typical of the Eugenia family, and the small, white, brush-like flowers attract native bees and butterflies. A component of the critically imperiled South Florida coastal hardwood hammock community, Red Stopper is an attractive, slow-growing landscape shrub for Zone 10–11 coastal gardens, providing wildlife value, year-round evergreen foliage, seasonal flowers, and colorful edible berries. Plant in well-drained, rocky to sandy, humus-rich soil in partial shade to full sun; established plants are drought-tolerant and salt-tolerant in coastal settings.
