Red Powderpuff (Blood Red Tassel Flower)

Plant in well-drained soil in full sun to partial shade; red powderpuff is one of the most dramatically beautiful flowering shrubs of the tropical and subtropical world, producing spectacular round clusters of deep crimson stamens that form feathery, silky balls 3–4 inches across — the individual flowers have no petals, only hundreds of brilliant red stamens that create the distinctive powderpuff effect. Blooms appear nearly year-round in frost-free areas and intermittently spring through fall in zone 9. The new foliage emerges in shades of copper and bronze before maturing to glossy dark green, providing an additional season of ornamental interest. An outstanding hummingbird and butterfly plant. Prune lightly after bloom cycles to maintain shape but avoid heavy pruning in fall; the plant blooms on old wood. A white-flowered species (Calliandra surinamensis, pink powderpuff) is also widely grown in Gulf Coast gardens.
