Опис

Dwarf Chinkapin Oak is a colony-forming native shrub oak of dry, rocky, sandy, or calcareous upland soils across the eastern United States from New England to Texas, spreading by underground rhizomes to form dense thickets in acid barrens, shale outcrops, dry prairies, and other open, infertile habitats. Though modest in stature at 3–8 feet, it produces large, sweet, low-tannin acorns with coarsely toothed chestnut-like leaves, and the acorns were historically harvested and eaten raw — without the leaching required for most other acorns — by Native Americans across its range; they remain among the best-tasting acorns of any North American oak. Spreading steadily by rhizomes to form wildlife thickets, Dwarf Chinkapin Oak provides year-round habitat value: dense nesting cover, summer leaf-litter decomposition, and a reliable annual fall acorn crop for turkeys, deer, squirrels, and many bird species. Direct sow fresh acorns in fall in dry, infertile, well-drained soil in full sun; no supplemental irrigation needed once established in xeric conditions. Спосіб посадки: Посів у відкритий ґрунт Відстань між рослинами: 36–72 дюймів Висота: 36–96 дюймів Дні до схожості: 14–30 Температура ґрунту для схожості: 4–16°C

Dwarf Chinkapin Oak produces sweet acorns with very low tannin content — one of the most palatable native acorns for wildlife and humans. The rhizomatous root system spreads to form colonies in appropriate conditions.
