Blackjack oak

Blackjack oak is the signature tree of dry, sandy, impoverished 'blackjack' soils across the southeastern United States — its distinctive club-shaped, three-lobed leaves with a broad, rounded top and narrow base are immediately recognizable, and the tree is virtually impossible to establish in rich or moist soils, thriving only in the driest, poorest, most acidic conditions that prevent most trees from growing. Often found alongside post oak in the 'Cross Timbers' forest of Oklahoma and Texas, blackjack oak commonly forms dense, almost impenetrable thickets on sandy, infertile ridges that are habitat for some of the most specialized dry-land wildlife communities in the South. Despite its demanding site requirements, blackjack oak is a highly valuable wildlife tree: its small acorns are consumed by wild turkey, whitetail deer, and at least 30 species of birds, and the crooked, gnarled dead snags are prime nesting habitat for cavity-nesting birds. In landscapes with genuinely poor, dry, acidic, sandy soils, it is one of the most reliable native trees for creating a self-sustaining, wildlife-rich oak woodland.
