Plant in consistently moist to wet, rich, slightly acidic soil in full sun to light shade; queen of the prairie is a magnificent native for rain gardens, pond edges, and any low area with reliable summer moisture. The enormous clouds of fluffy, peach-pink flowers on tall stems in midsummer are among the most dramatic native perennial displays available and attract native bees in large numbers. The plant spreads by rhizome to form large colonies and is not suited to small gardens or dry sites. Divide every 4–5 years in spring; each division should include a generous section of rhizome with multiple crowns. Cut back in late fall after frost.
