Опис
Pyramid Magnolia is a rare native deciduous magnolia of the southeastern coastal plain, found in scattered populations in Georgia, Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, and Texas, growing in moist, rich, well-drained soil in the understory of mixed hardwood forest — a much more restricted habitat than the closely related Fraser Magnolia (Magnolia fraseri), which it resembles closely but with a more pyramidal form and consistently smaller stature. White, cup-shaped flowers 3–4 inches across appear in April and May before or with the emerging leaves; the large, auriculate (ear-lobed) leaves and attractive pink-red fruit clusters provide multi-season interest similar to its Appalachian relatives. Among the least-known of the native magnolias in horticulture despite being well-suited to zone 7–9 gardens, Pyramid Magnolia is increasingly available from specialty native nurseries as interest in deciduous native magnolias grows. Plant in moist, well-drained, slightly acidic, deeply amended soil in partial shade; protect from strong winds that damage the large leaves.
