Plant in well-drained, alkaline to neutral, average to poor soil in full sun to light shade; Mexican plum is the finest native flowering tree of the Texas limestone country, erupting in a cloud of fragrant white flowers in late February to March before any leaves emerge — often the first tree in bloom at the end of winter. A single tree is self-fertile and produces 1–2 inch dark purple plums in late summer with sweet-tart, deeply flavorful flesh excellent for jams, jellies, wine, and fresh eating. Unlike the suckering, thicket-forming Chickasaw plum, Mexican plum grows as a single-trunked tree and does not sucker; it is well-adapted to alkaline limestone and caliche soils where most fruit trees struggle. Mockingbirds and other thrushes consume the ripe fruit. Drought tolerant once established.
