Опис

Eastern Cottonwood is the fastest-growing native tree in North America, capable of adding 6–8 feet of height per year in moist, fertile, alluvial soils — a growth rate no other native tree approaches — and is native to the river bars, floodplains, and moist bottomlands of virtually every drainage system in eastern and central North America from Quebec to Florida and west to the Rockies. The triangular (deltoid) leaves tremble and shimmer in the slightest breeze due to their flattened petioles, creating a distinctive rustling sound audible at considerable distances; in late spring, female trees produce enormous quantities of cottony-tufted seeds that fill the air like midsummer snow, settling on every surface and creating what many observers find an enchanting spectacle and others find a nuisance. An important pioneer tree for streambank stabilization and riparian restoration, Eastern Cottonwood provides critical early-successional habitat for many birds and insects. Plant male cultivars to avoid seed dispersal; provide full sun and deep, moist soil near water features or for rapid windbreak and privacy screening. Спосіб посадки: Висадка розсади Відстань між рослинами: 480–720 дюймів Висота: 480–1080 дюймів Дні до схожості: 5–14 Температура ґрунту для схожості: 16–24°C

Eastern Cottonwood grows extraordinarily fast — up to 6–8 feet per year — but is short-lived (60–100 years) and prone to branch breakage in ice storms; plant male cultivars to avoid the cottony seed mess of female trees.
