Pond Cypress

Plant in moist to wet, slightly acidic, sandy to loamy soil in full sun — pond cypress is the smaller, more columnar companion to bald cypress (Taxodium distichum), native to the shallow, still, slightly acidic waters of coastal plain ponds, sloughs, bayheads, and flatwoods pools of the eastern Gulf Coast from Virginia to Louisiana. It is more columnar and narrower in crown than bald cypress — an important distinction for smaller water gardens and landscape plantings where bald cypress would eventually become too wide. Like bald cypress, it is deciduous, producing soft, feathery, gray-green needles that turn brilliant orange-brown in fall before dropping, and develops picturesque 'knees' (pneumatophores) in wet soils. It tolerates standing water throughout the growing season and acidic, nutrient-poor, sandy soils that defeat other trees. The ideal tree for small wet garden features, bioswales, and moist low areas requiring a deciduous, fine-textured, low-maintenance large tree.
