Plumleaf Azalea (Summer Azalea)

Plant in moist, humus-rich, acidic (pH 4.5–5.5), well-drained soil in partial to full shade; plumleaf azalea holds a unique distinction among native deciduous azaleas — it blooms in July and August, later than every other native azalea species, and is therefore in bloom when every other azalea in the garden has long finished. The large, brilliant orange-red (rarely yellow) flowers appear on the shrub in midsummer, providing color and hummingbird nectar in a season when the woodland garden often lacks bloom. This is one of the rarest native azaleas in the wild, found only in southwestern Georgia and eastern Alabama, but it is a superb and underused garden plant. It tolerates the heat and partial shade of zone 8–9 summers better than most native azaleas. Mulch heavily with pine bark to maintain soil moisture and acidity.
