Опис
Planer Tree — also called Water Elm — is a small and uncommon native tree of permanently wet swamps, river floodplains, and cypress-tupelo bottomlands of the coastal plain from South Carolina to Florida and west to Texas, where it often grows in the understory beneath bald cypress, water tupelo, and swamp cottonwood. The small, rough-textured leaves and warty, inconspicuous drupes superficially resemble those of the closely related elms, but the single nutlet with a distinctly rough, tuberculate surface is the diagnostic feature that separates Planera from Ulmus. Seeds should be collected and planted fresh in moist to wet, acidic soil under light shade, as viability drops quickly; container-grown nursery transplants are the most reliable method for establishing this species in cultivation. Planer Tree is rarely grown in ornamental settings but makes a distinctive small specimen for rain gardens, pond margins, and naturalized floodplain plantings where saturated soils and periodic flooding prevent most woody plants from thriving.

Час посадки: 0–4 тижнів spring
Plant container-grown transplants in early spring in moist to wet, acidic, humus-rich soil in partial shade to full sun; Planer Tree tolerates and prefers seasonally flooded conditions. Seeds should be sown fresh in moist, saturated soil as soon as they ripen in spring, as viability diminishes quickly.
