Root cuttings in extremely well-drained, sandy or amended cactus soil in full sun; dragon fruit is a climbing cactus native to Central America that produces spectacular night-blooming white flowers 12 inches across, followed by the familiar large, brightly colored fruit with its distinctive pink-magenta or yellow skin and speckled white or red flesh. Plants take 1–2 years from cuttings to first fruit, then produce prolifically. The vine-like stems climb via aerial roots and require a sturdy post or trellis. In zone 9a, protect from hard freezes with frost cloth — stems will die back at 28°F but established plants often resprout from the base. Fruit ripens 30–50 days after flowering; harvest when the pink color fully develops and the wings begin to wilt. Multiple varieties exist including red-fleshed 'American Beauty' and yellow-skinned Selenicereus megalanthus.
