Pipevine (Dutchman's Pipe)

Plant in moist, humus-rich, well-drained to moderately moist soil in partial to full shade; pipevine is a vigorous native climbing vine with enormous heart-shaped leaves that creates a dense, lush shade canopy and unusual curved pipe-shaped brown flowers in late spring that lure and temporarily trap small flies as pollinators. It is the essential host plant for the stunning pipevine swallowtail butterfly, which lays eggs exclusively on Aristolochia species — the caterpillars absorb aristolochic acids from the plant, making both larva and adult butterfly toxic to predators. Plant several vines together to provide enough leaf mass for the caterpillars. Train on a sturdy arbor, pergola, or fence; the vine can grow 20–30 feet and covers itself with tropical-looking foliage by midsummer. Cut back hard in late winter to control size.
