Pink Banana is one of the most ornamental of the small bananas, native to the forests of Assam, India, and grown worldwide for the striking combination of its vivid pink, velvety flower bracts and small, bright pink, hairy fruits that split open when ripe to reveal sweet white flesh studded with seeds — an unusual display that makes the plant a conversation piece in any garden. Growing only 4–6 feet tall, it is well-suited to container culture, small garden spaces, and use as an accent among larger tropical foliage plants, and it blooms and fruits within its first year from a good-sized pup. In zones 8–9 the pseudostem may die to the ground in freezing weather, but the rhizome re-sprouts reliably in spring; in zones 9b–11 it is effectively evergreen. Divide pups from the parent clump in spring, plant in rich, well-drained soil in full sun, and water and fertilize generously throughout the growing season.
