Prairie phlox

Direct sow cold-stratified seed in early spring in lean, well-drained, sandy to gravelly soil in full sun; prairie phlox is more drought tolerant and heat tolerant than the commonly planted P. divaricata and grows in dry prairie soils and open woodland edges across the eastern US. The fragrant pink to lavender flower clusters bloom in late spring and attract swallowtail butterflies and native bee species. The downy (pilosa) stems give the plant a soft texture throughout the season. Shear back by one-half after bloom to prevent disease and encourage fresh growth; plants in rich soil or shade are more susceptible to powdery mildew. Excellent combined with native grasses in a dry meadow or prairie planting.
