Опис
Root cuttings in sandy, well-drained soil in full sun; Barbados gooseberry is one of the most botanically fascinating of all edible plants — a primitive cactus (family Cactaceae) that retains true persistent leaves unlike all other cacti, making it a living link between leafy plants and the succulent cacti. The woody, thorny scrambling vine can reach 30 feet when climbing, with oval, slightly succulent leaves and masses of fragrant white to pale pink flowers in fall. The yellow to orange fruits ripen to 0.75 inches with multiple seeds embedded in pulp with a pleasant acid-sweet, citrus-like flavor — used fresh, in jams, and as a vegetable cooked with rice in the Caribbean. The young leaves are edible as a potherb. In South America the leaves are consumed as 'ora-pro-nobis,' valued for their exceptionally high protein content (25% dry weight). An unusual and productive edible vine for frost-free gardens.
