It tolerates alkaline soil, drought, and heat and actually blooms better under mild stress than in rich, moist conditions. Deer resistant and attractive to hummingbirds and butterflies. In zone 7–8, top growth may be killed by hard freezes but roots resprout vigorously in spring. Light pruning in late winter promotes compact, bushy growth.
