Plant in moist, acidic, humus-rich, well-drained soil in partial to full shade; pachysandra is the standard choice for dense shade under shallow-rooted trees like maples where most plants fail. The glossy, evergreen whorls of foliage form a uniform 6–8 inch carpet that requires essentially no maintenance once established. Small white flowers in spring are mildly fragrant. Volutella blight can cause patches to brown and die — improve drainage, avoid overwatering, and remove affected plant material promptly. Do not plant in full sun or very dry soil, as foliage will yellow and decline rapidly. Takes 2–3 years from planting to achieve full coverage.
