Allow a pad cutting to callus (dry) for one week before planting in sandy or rocky, sharply drained soil in full sun; overwatering is the most common cause of failure. Young pads (nopales) are harvested when 6–8 inches long and still tender, using tongs and a sharp knife to remove glochids (small barbed spines) by scraping before cooking. The pads are eaten grilled, in tacos, scrambled with eggs, or in soups, with a mild, slightly mucilaginous texture. The pear-shaped red or yellow fruits (tunas) that ripen in late summer are sweet and edible; wear thick gloves when harvesting as glochids penetrate skin on contact. Established plants are extremely drought and heat tolerant and require virtually no care.
