Ogeechee Tupelo is a native swamp tree of the coastal plain river bottomlands and freshwater swamps of Georgia and northern Florida, most abundant along the Ogeechee, Altamaha, and Suwannee rivers, where it grows in soils that are seasonally to permanently flooded. The large, oblong red drupes — sometimes called Ogeechee limes — are intensely sour and were historically used by Native Americans and early settlers as a substitute for lime in cooking and preserves; they remain a prized wild foraged ingredient in the modern era. The fragrant white flowers are the renowned source of prized tupelo honey, a light-colored, mild-flavored honey with unique fructose chemistry that resists crystallization and commands premium prices at market. Plant in permanently wet, acidic, humus-rich soil in partial shade to full sun; this species is intolerant of drought or alkaline conditions and grows best where roots reach permanent water.
