Опис
Oconee Azalea is a spectacular native deciduous azalea of dry to mesic upland oak-hickory and pine-oak woods of Georgia and South Carolina, producing some of the most vivid orange, red, and scarlet floral displays of any native North American shrub when it blooms in March and April — before or with the emerging leaves — providing a burst of intense color unlike any other native plant in the early spring landscape. The flowers are not fragrant but are intensely colored in shades of flame orange to deep scarlet, and the plant's natural occurrence is restricted to a relatively small area of the inner coastal plain and piedmont of the Carolinas, making it a regionally rare and culturally significant plant of considerable interest to azalea enthusiasts. A moderate-growing shrub that develops a naturally graceful, open, rounded form, Oconee Azalea provides superior wildlife value to most exotic azalea cultivars and supports native bumblebee queens emerging in early spring. Plant in well-drained, strongly acidic, humus-rich soil in partial shade to high, shifting shade; Oconee Azalea will not tolerate wet feet or alkaline soils.
