Опис
Plant in moist, slightly acidic, well-drained to moderately moist, loamy soil in full sun to partial shade — black gum consistently ranks among the top native trees for fall foliage color: its leaves turn brilliant shades of scarlet, orange, purple, and wine-red as early as late August in the South, among the first of all trees to change, providing exceptionally early and long-lasting fall color in the landscape. The tree is pyramidal when young and becomes more irregular and picturesque with age; horizontal branching and somewhat layered architecture make it attractive year-round. Small, dark blue to black berries in clusters ripen in September–October and are consumed by over 30 species of songbirds and mammals. Black gum is one of the most important wildlife trees in the eastern US due to its early-ripening, high-fat fruits. Adaptable to a wide range of moisture conditions from dry upland slopes to wet bottomlands — an outstanding landscape tree for native plantings.

Plant container specimens (ball-and-burlap or container-grown) in fall in moist, slightly acidic, well-drained to moderately moist, loamy soil in full sun to partial shade; black gum develops a deep taproot and transplants best when young — avoid moving established specimens.
