Blue Walking Iris (Brazilian Walking Iris)

Plant in moist, humus-rich, slightly acidic soil in partial shade to filtered light — blue walking iris is one of the most dramatically beautiful foliage and flowering plants for the shaded Gulf Coast garden, producing bold, fan-shaped clumps of upright, iris-like leaves 3–4 feet tall. The large, intricately patterned blue-purple flowers — each 3–4 inches across with white and golden markings — open from plantlets produced at the tips of flower stems; when these plantlets become heavy enough, the stem bends to the ground and the offset roots to start a new plant nearby, 'walking' the clump gradually across the garden. The flowers last only a single day but appear in succession over several weeks in late spring and early summer. An outstanding large-scale accent or specimen plant for the shaded side of buildings, under oaks, and in tropical-style garden compositions in zone 9–11. Grow in containers in cooler zones.
