Mysore Raspberry (Hill Raspberry, Ceylon Raspberry)

Plant in well-drained, slightly acidic soil in full sun to partial shade; Mysore raspberry is the premier fruiting bramble for subtropical gardens — the only raspberry-type fruit that thrives and produces abundantly in zone 9–10 conditions where standard raspberries fail from summer heat and disease. Native to the hills of South Asia, it produces arching, thorny canes 5–8 feet tall with attractive silver-backed leaves and large clusters of small, dark-red to black berries with an intense raspberry flavor from October through April. Unlike temperate raspberries, it fruits on second-year canes (floricanes) but in a warm-climate evergreen pattern. Cut canes to the ground after fruiting; the plant regrows vigorously. It can be invasive outside cultivation where conditions suit it — avoid planting near natural areas.
