Mountain Soursop (Guanábana Cimarrona)

Plant in moist, fertile, slightly acidic to neutral, well-drained soil in full sun — mountain soursop is the larger-fruited relative of common soursop (Annona muricata), native to the rainforests of the Amazon basin, and is considered more vigorous and faster-fruiting than its more common relative. The spiny, ovoid fruits (3–6 inches) have white, fibrous, juicy flesh with a strong tropical flavor used to make juice, ice cream, and desserts similar to soursop. The tree is faster-growing than common soursop and shows slightly greater cold tolerance. Like all Annona species, the flowers produce heat and attract beetle pollinators overnight — cross-pollination with another tree improves fruit set significantly. The handsome, large, dark-green glossy leaves make it an attractive ornamental even when not in fruit. A productive, fast-bearing tropical fruit tree for zone 9b–12 gardens.
