Опис
Plant in moist, fertile, slightly acidic soil in full sun to partial shade; the red mulberry is the only mulberry native to eastern North America and produces berries superior in flavor and nutrition to the introduced white mulberry — richer, more complex, and deeply red to black when fully ripe. It is an ecologically critical plant, providing fruit for hundreds of wildlife species at a critical early-summer period. The berries are edible fresh or made into pies, jams, wine, and dried fruit; harvest is best done by spreading a tarp and shaking the branches, as berries stain everything they touch. Red mulberry is distinguished from white mulberry by its leaves, which are rough on the upper surface (smooth in white mulberry). It unfortunately hybridizes readily with the invasive white mulberry where the two grow together, threatening the genetic integrity of pure wild populations; purchasing certified native red mulberry trees from reputable nurseries is important.

Час посадки: 0–4 тижнів spring
Plant container-grown trees in spring in fertile, moist, well-drained to moist, slightly acidic to neutral soil in full sun to partial shade; red mulberry grows naturally along stream banks, woodland edges, and moist bottomland and tolerates partial shade better than most fruit trees.
